Electromagnetic Flowmeter for Oilfield Water Injection & Produced Water: High-Pressure Flow Case

Oilfield Water Injection & Produced Water — Electromagnetic Flowmeter Application

An oilfield operator needed to meter water-flood injection, including polymer flooding, and produced-water lines. Injection pressures are high, the fluids are oil–water mixtures carrying sand and dissolved salts, and the well sites are remote and largely unattended — so the meter had to be rugged, accurate and remotely readable.

Working Condition

  • Media: injection water, polymer-flood solutions and saline produced water.
  • High injection pressure demands a strong, well-rated meter body.
  • Oil film, sand and dissolved salts disturb reading stability.
  • Remote, unattended sites require digital output and low maintenance.

Customer Pain Points

High pressure and corrosion attacked ordinary meters, and oil film together with sand made readings unstable. Because the sites were remote, operators could not justify frequent visits for manual reading or adjustment — they needed dependable digital data and low maintenance. Poor injection measurement also weakened reservoir-pressure management.

Engineering Selection

Parameter Selection Reason
Pressure rating High-pressure flanged body Matches injection line pressure
Lining PTFE / PFA Salt and chemical resistance with a smooth bore
Electrode Hastelloy / titanium type Resists chloride-rich produced water
Output HART / RS-485 (Modbus) SCADA and remote monitoring
Build Weatherproof, rugged enclosure Unattended remote well sites

Installation Logic

  1. Verify the meter flange and body rating meet the maximum injection pressure.
  2. Install on the discharge side, keeping straight runs to stabilize pump-induced swirl.
  3. Use periodic verification or a bypass to check accuracy without a full shutdown.
  4. Ensure grounding to the wellhead or pipeline for a stable signal in high-salinity media.
  5. Wire the digital output back to SCADA for remote readout and alarms.

Why an Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Electromagnetic flowmeters are well matched to oilfield service because they measure the conductive water phase directly, handling the oil-and-water mixtures and dissolved salts found in injection and produced-water lines. The full-bore design presents no obstruction to sand-laden fluid, so erosion is limited and pressure loss stays low. With a high-pressure body and chloride-resistant electrodes and lining, the meter survives the corrosive, high-pressure duty, and digital protocols such as HART and Modbus bring the data back from remote, unattended well sites.

Result

The high-pressure meter delivered dependable injection and produced-water flow data despite sand and salts. Remote digital readout cut manual wellsite visits, and improved flow visibility supported better water-flood management and reservoir-pressure control.

Procurement Decision

For oilfield duty, pressure integrity comes first; then match the lining and electrode to salinity. Require a digital protocol (HART/Modbus) for SCADA, and plan a calibration strategy suited to remote operation.
