The Venturi nozzle flowmeter is a differential pressure flow measurement instrument that combines the characteristics of the Venturi tube and the nozzle. It calculates the flow rate by measuring the pressure difference generated when the fluid flows through the nozzle.
The Venturi nozzle inherits the advantages of both its "parents":
Low pressure loss (inheriting the advantage of the Venturi tube)
Thanks to the presence of the diffuser section, its pressure recovery capability is far superior to that of standard orifice plates and nozzles. The permanent pressure loss is usually 50% - 80% lower than that of orifice plates, resulting in significant energy-saving effects. Although the pressure recovery efficiency (about 85%) is slightly lower than that of the longer classic Venturi tube (about 90%), it is still very excellent.
High precision and stable flow coefficient (inheriting the advantage of the nozzle)
The nozzle's profile is streamlined, insensitive to wear, and its flow coefficient is supported by a large amount of international standard data, thus ensuring high accuracy, typically ±0.75% to ±1.5%, with excellent repeatability.
Low requirement for upstream straight pipe section
Due to its streamlined inlet, it is less sensitive to the velocity distribution than orifice plates. The required upstream straight pipe section is usually shorter than that of orifice plates but slightly longer than that of classic Venturi tubes.
Wear-resistant and dirt-tolerant
The smooth inlet contour enables it to withstand fluids containing a small amount of solid particles without easy wear or clogging.
Short overall length and compact structure
Compared to classic Venturi tubes, the Venturi nozzle has a shorter overall length. This is because it replaces the longer classic contraction section with a shorter nozzle. This is an important advantage in situations where installation space is limited.
| Characteristics | Venturi Nozzle | Traditional Venturi Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Inlet Section | Standard nozzle (arc-shaped contraction) | Conical contraction section |
| Total Length | Shorter | Longer |
| Pressure Loss | Lower (pressure recovery efficiency about 85%) | Extremely low (pressure recovery efficiency about 90%) |
| Accuracy and Stability | High, based on mature data of standard nozzles | High, but more dependent on individual manufacturing accuracy |
| Manufacturing Cost | Relatively low (for the same diameter) | Very high |
| Standardization Degree | Covered by international standards (such as ISO 5167), strong interchangeability | Slightly lower standardization degree, with design differences among different manufacturers |
In summary: The Venturi nozzle is a "compact and economical" variant of the classic Venturi tube. It significantly shortens the length and reduces the cost at the expense of a small portion of pressure recovery performance, while maintaining the core advantage of high accuracy.
The Venturi nozzle flowmeter is an "all-rounder" among differential pressure flowmeters. It does not have the significant pressure loss of orifice plates, nor is it as expensive and bulky as the classic Venturi tube.
It achieves an excellent balance between performance, cost, and size, making it particularly suitable for precise and energy-efficient measurement of steam, gas, and high-pressure liquids. When you need higher efficiency and accuracy than orifice plates but are constrained by the budget or space requirements of classic Venturi tubes, the Venturi nozzle is almost the perfect compromise.
