Low Cost High Reliability Long Service Life Float Ball Level Switch

The float ball level switch is one of the simplest, most economical and most direct solutions in the field of liquid level control. It utilizes the buoyancy of the liquid to drive a float ball with an internal magnet, which triggers a sealed reed switch to output a switch signal.

Core components:
  • Float ball: A hollow sealed sphere, usually made of stainless steel or plastic, providing buoyancy.

  • Built-in magnet: Fixed inside the float ball or on a lever linked to it.

  • Reed switch: The core electrical component. It is sealed in a glass tube and has two contacts made of magnetic material inside. When there is no external magnetic field, the contacts are open; when a strong enough magnetic field approaches, the reeds are magnetized and attract each other, closing the contacts and completing the circuit.

Main advantages:
  • Simple structure and low cost: No complex circuits, low failure rate, and easy maintenance.

  • High reliability and long service life: No mechanical connection parts, strong resistance to load impact, and service life can reach over a million times.

  • Wide application range: Can measure various liquids, including water, oil, acid, and alkali, with material options such as stainless steel, PP, and PVDF, suitable for corrosive media.

  • Flexible installation: Supports horizontal, vertical, or side installation, and can be customized for multi-point control.

  • Good explosion-proof performance: Suitable for flammable and explosive environments.

Main Types and Installation Forms

According to the application scenarios, float ball level switches mainly come in the following forms:

  1. Side-mounted Horizontal Float Ball Switch (the most common)
    • Structure: Installed horizontally on the side wall of the container through a flange or thread. Inside, there is a lever with a pivot point, one end of which is the float ball and the other end is equipped with a magnet and a counterweight. A reed switch is fixed beside the lever.

    • Operation: Changes in liquid level cause the float ball to swing up and down, bringing the magnet closer to or farther from the reed switch, thereby triggering an action.

    • Application: Water tanks, oil tanks, water pools, etc.

  2. Top-mounted Vertical Float Ball Switch
    • Structure: Installed vertically from the top of the container through a thread or flange. The float ball has a through hole at its center, which is fitted onto a vertical pipe. One or more reed switches are installed inside the pipe according to the number of control points, and the float ball has a magnetic ring inside.

    • Operation: When the liquid level changes, the float ball moves up and down along the pipe. When the magnetic ring inside the float ball passes the position of the reed switch, it triggers the switch.

    • Application: Deep wells, water towers, pressure tanks. It can conveniently achieve multi-point control (such as stopping the pump at low liquid level, starting the pump at high liquid level, and alarming at ultra-high liquid level).

  3. Cable-type Float Ball Switch
    • Structure: Inside a plastic float ball, there is a movable hammer. The switch element (reed switch) and a counterweight hammer are encapsulated at the cable entry at the tail of the float ball. The float ball is suspended in the container through a cable.

    • Operation: When the float ball tilts to a certain angle with the liquid level, the movable hammer inside rolls, driving the reed switch to act.

    • Application: Pump control, sewage ponds, sump pits. It is especially suitable for containers where it is inconvenient to open side holes.

Application scenarios
  • Industrial field: Liquid level control and alarm for storage tanks, reactors, boilers, cooling towers, etc. in petrochemical industry.

  • Water treatment and environmental protection: Automatic drainage and water replenishment for sewage treatment ponds, sedimentation tanks, water tanks, water towers, etc.

  • Food and pharmaceuticals: Liquid level monitoring for raw material tanks of beverages, juices, medicines, etc., with materials meeting hygiene standards.

  • Ships and machinery: Liquid level monitoring for oil tanks, water tanks, hydraulic systems, etc. on ships.

  • Civil facilities: Liquid level control for water heaters, washing machines, agricultural irrigation, etc.

Core Summary: Float Ball Level Switch vs. Other Level Meters
  • vs. Magnetic Flap Level Gauge: The magnetic flap is like "eyes", allowing you to see the liquid level; the float ball switch is like "hands and feet", automatically performing actions when the liquid level reaches a certain point.

  • vs. Continuous Measuring Instruments (such as Magnetostrictive): The float ball switch answers "Has the liquid level arrived?" ; Continuous measurement instruments answer the question, "What is the exact liquid level?" .

Conclusion:

The float level switch is the simplest and most classic "switch" for achieving automatic liquid level control. When your requirement is merely a simple two-position control such as "stop when the liquid level is high and start when it is low", it is almost always the best choice.
