External Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flowmeter With Non-Contact Installation No Pressure Loss

The external clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is a type of instrument that measures the flow velocity and flow rate of the fluid inside the pipe from the outside of the pipe by using the principle of ultrasonic waves. Its most prominent feature is that during installation, there is no need to cut the pipe or stop the process. It only requires clamping the sensor (probe) onto the outer wall of the pipe, and it belongs to non-contact measurement.

Main Advantages
  • Non-contact, no production halt installation: The greatest advantage. No need to cut pipes or stop production. Installation and maintenance do not affect the production process, greatly saving costs.
  • No pressure loss: The sensor is outside the pipe, generating no additional resistance, ensuring system energy efficiency.
  • Wide range of applicable pipe diameters: Can measure from a few millimeters to several meters in diameter pipes, especially cost-effective in large diameter measurements.
  • Multi-functional: One host, by configuring different probes and parameters, can measure various pipe diameters and media, with strong versatility.
  • Can measure corrosive and high hygiene requirement media: The sensor does not come into contact with the fluid, making it highly suitable for measuring corrosive liquids or media that must maintain hygiene (such as food and medicine).
  • Can measure bidirectional flow: Through program settings, it can easily measure the forward and reverse flow of the fluid.
Time Difference Method vs. Doppler Method
Characteristics Time Difference Method Doppler Method
Applicable Fluids Clean, single-phase liquids (such as water, oil, and chemical reagents) with low bubble and particle content Liquids containing a moderate amount of suspended particles or bubbles (such as sewage, slurry, and pulp)
Measurement Object Fluid flow velocity Movement speed of particles in the fluid
Accuracy High Relatively low, dependent on particle concentration and size
Cost Generally higher Generally lower
Application Scenarios Water treatment, heating, air conditioning, petrochemicals, precise energy metering Mining, papermaking, sewage treatment, slurry measurement
Typical application fields
  • Water and wastewater treatment: Flow monitoring and energy management of raw water, tap water, circulating water and wastewater.
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning): Flow and energy balance measurement of building hot and cold water systems.
  • Petrochemical: Measurement of various process water, chemical reagents and refined oil (clean).
  • Energy management: Energy audits of factories and buildings, measurement of steam condensate, cooling water, etc.
  • Water conservancy and irrigation: Flow measurement of large pipeline water conveyance and irrigation channels.
Key Installation Steps
  1. Pipe Cleaning: Use sandpaper or a cleaning agent to remove rust, paint, and scale from the installation site to ensure the outer wall of the pipe is smooth and flat.
  2. Sensor Positioning: Based on the pipe diameter and installation method (Z-type / V-type), use the positioning ruler provided by the manufacturer to determine the sensor spacing to avoid offset.
  3. Coupling Agent Application: Apply a special ultrasonic coupling agent (or grease) between the sensor and the outer wall of the pipe to eliminate air and ensure efficient ultrasonic transmission (the coupling agent should be temperature-resistant, anti-aging, and match the fluid temperature).
  4. Fixing Method: Use a dedicated fixture to fix the sensor on the pipe to prevent displacement caused by vibration (anti-vibration pads should be added in scenarios with high vibration).

The external clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is an extremely flexible, powerful and non-invasive flow measurement tool. When installed correctly by trained personnel in the right application scenarios, it can provide very reliable and accurate data. However, it is not a "universal meter", and its successful application highly depends on a deep understanding of fluid characteristics, pipeline conditions and installation details.
