Electromagnetic Flowmeter for Steel Plant Cooling Water & Mill-Scale Slurry: Abrasion-Resistant Case

Steel Plant Cooling Water & Mill-Scale Slurry — Electromagnetic Flowmeter Application

A steel plant needed dependable flow measurement on two demanding duties: blast-furnace and continuous-casting cooling-water circuits, and mill-scale slurry and descaling lines. Cooling water runs hot, while slurry carries hard mill-scale and oxide solids that abrade anything in contact with the media — a classic wear problem for flow instrumentation.

Working Condition

  • Media: hot cooling water plus solids-laden mill-scale and descaling slurry.
  • Slurry contains hard, abrasive iron-oxide and scale particles.
  • Elevated water temperature stresses ordinary linings and seals.
  • Plant-wide control needs water-balance and descaling flow data.

Customer Pain Points

Previous meters eroded on the solids-laden slurry and lost accuracy as the wetted parts wore. High water temperature degraded ordinary linings and seals, shortening service life, while water-balance and descaling control demanded reliable, repeatable data across the plant. Frequent replacement of worn meters drove both cost and unplanned downtime.

Engineering Selection

Parameter Selection Reason
Lining Hard rubber (abrasion grade) Outstanding resistance to slurry abrasion
Electrode Hastelloy C or tungsten-carbide type Resists both corrosion and erosion in slurry
Body Carbon-steel flanged, robust Mechanical strength for large pipework
Protection IP68 Pits, splash zones and damp trenches
Output 4–20 mA + pulse + HART Plant control, water balance and totalizing

Installation Logic

  1. Keep velocity in a moderate band (~2–3 m/s) to limit abrasion while staying self-cleaning.
  2. Install after the pumps, on the pressure side, to keep the pipe full.
  3. Ground the meter to the pipe network for a stable signal in conductive slurry.
  4. Leave serviceable clearance — slurries mean periodic electrode inspection.
  5. Route cabling away from heavy drives to avoid electrical noise.

Why an Electromagnetic Flowmeter

In steel plants the electromagnetic flowmeter earns its place because there are no moving parts to erode or jam in the abrasive slurry, and its full-bore design avoids the blockage typical of meters with internal obstructions. The signal is generated by the flowing conductive liquid itself, so entrained mill scale and oxide solids do not stop measurement. Paired with an abrasion-grade rubber liner and erosion-resistant electrodes, the meter tolerates both the hot cooling water and the solids-laden descaling lines, feeding reliable data to plant control.

Result

The abrasion-grade liner extended service life on slurry compared with standard-liner meters. Reliable cooling-water balance data helped manage pumps and heat exchangers, and unplanned replacements and maintenance cost were reduced.

Procurement Decision

For steel plants, match lining hardness to solids content and confirm the maximum media temperature. Choose electrodes that resist both corrosion and erosion, and specify IP68 where pits and trenches are wet.
