Electromagnetic Flowmeter for Sugar Mill Juice & Molasses: Hygienic Viscous Media Flow Case
Published On: September 30, 2026
Sugar Mill Juice & Molasses — Electromagnetic Flowmeter Application
A cane sugar mill needed reliable flow measurement across evaporation and crystallization stages, covering diluted juice, syrup and final molasses. Molasses is dark, viscous and still electrically conductive, while juice carries fine bagasse fiber and runs at elevated temperature — a combination that defeats mechanical and differential-pressure meters.
Working Condition
- Media: cane juice, syrup and molasses at several process stages.
- Molasses is highly viscous, dark and prone to crystallization and coating.
- Juice is abrasive to a degree due to fine bagasse fiber and runs hot.
- Food-grade product line requiring hygiene and clean-in-place (CIP).
Customer Pain Points
Mechanical meters wore quickly on abrasive juice and simply failed on sticky molasses. Crystallization and coating built up on internal parts and blocked impulse lines, causing drift and repeated maintenance. Because the line handled food-grade product, hygiene and CIP cleaning were non-negotiable, so the meter had to open easily for cleaning without disturbing calibration.
Engineering Selection
| Parameter | Selection | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lining | PFA / FEP (food grade) | Smooth, non-stick, CIP-friendly; resists high temperature |
| Electrode | SS316L | Compatible with sugar media and hygienic by design |
| Connection | Hygienic tri-clamp | Easy dismantling for cleaning |
| Temperature | Rated for the hot juice stage | Handles sustained elevated process temperature |
| Output | 4–20 mA + HART | Integration with mill control and batch systems |
Installation Logic
- Use a non-stick, full-bore liner so viscous molasses does not cling to the tube.
- Mount where the line stays full; avoid the top of horizontal runs.
- Provide clean straight runs away from valves that shear viscous product.
- For CIP, select a hygienic connection that opens without breaking calibration.
- Insulate or heat-trace the molasses line so viscosity stays within the design range.
Why an Electromagnetic Flowmeter
Electromagnetic flowmeters suit sugar processing because the measurement is unaffected by the viscosity or stickiness of the product, which is exactly where mechanical meters struggle with molasses. The unobstructed full bore lets viscous syrup and juice pass without build-up, and the smooth food-grade liner supports clean-in-place routines. With no moving parts to wear or seize, the meter keeps working reliably through the abrasive juice and coating-prone molasses stages alike, delivering the consistent data the mill needs for mass balance.
Result
One meter family delivered consistent measurement across juice, syrup and molasses. The smooth, non-stick bore reduced cleaning frequency and downtime, and better mass-balance control improved visibility across the evaporation and crystallization stages.
Procurement Decision
For sugar lines, prioritize the liner material and hygienic connection, confirm the maximum process temperature, and verify the meter performs at the molasses viscosity seen at the lowest expected temperature.
