Product Description
Flow measurement problems in closed loops rarely arrive as a bang. They arrive as drift. The energy billing figure stops reconciling with the chiller log, the BMS trend turns jagged at night when pumps run at 40 %, and eventually someone cuts the pipe open to find a turbine rotor scuffed flat by grit that has been circulating since the first flush. By then the site has already paid twice: once for a meter that under-read, and once for the commercial dispute the under-reading created.
Three patterns push a buyer from mechanical toward transit-time ultrasonic measurement:
- Load swings are wide. Variable-speed pumps have pushed closed loops from a constant 2 m/s design point down to 0.3 m/s for most of the night. A turbine that is accurate at design flow can lose most of its usable turndown below 15 % of range.
- The water is not clean. Glycol top-ups, magnetite from old steel pipe and construction debris all attack bearings. Every maintenance intervention on a mechanical meter means a shutdown, a gasket set and a re-commissioning record.
- Pressure budget is spent elsewhere. In a loop already tight on differential head, a meter that costs 10–30 kPa of permanent pressure loss is a meter that forces a larger pump.
| Service condition | What the site normally sees | Commercial consequence | How the spool ultrasonic meter responds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night / low-load operation 0.3–0.8 m/s, single pump running, long idle periods |
Mechanical meter drops below its start-up flow and reads zero while the chiller clearly consumes energy; totalising error accumulates silently across six months of night shifts | Energy invoices under-recover by 8–15 %; tenant disputes surface at year-end reconciliation with no way to reconstruct the missing data | Bidirectional transit-time measurement holds 1 %–2 % of reading down to 0.05 m/s, so night flow is fully captured; no start-up threshold to cross |
| Fouled or glycol-charged water 20–35 % propylene glycol, magnetite and biofilm on pipe wall |
Wear on rotor and bearings accelerates, reading drifts 5–10 %, and sediment traps in the body causing a progressive drop in indicated flow | Unplanned shutdown to swap the meter, loss of contractual accuracy, and a cooling season on suspect data before the fault is confirmed | No moving parts and no obstruction in the bore; transducer pockets sit flush, so solids pass through and wall fouling is compensated by the documented roughness setting |
The measurement has nothing to do with the mass of the water and everything to do with the sound velocity of it. Two piezoelectric transducers sit in the spool at a known angle and a known path length apart. Each fires an acoustic pulse through the water. A pulse travelling with the flow arrives marginally sooner than a pulse travelling against it, and the resulting time difference is proportional to the average velocity along the acoustic path.
That single physical relationship is what makes the device so durable in service:
- Velocity is derived from time, not from motion. There is no rotor to stall, no bearing to clog and no reed switch to fatigue — the sensor only has to survive, not to move.
- Density, pressure and viscosity do not enter the calculation. A glycol concentration change alters the sound speed and is corrected internally, so the volumetric reading stays inside specification across the season.
- Multi-path averaging flattens the profile. The SP2000 uses a reflected double-path arrangement that averages across the diameter, which is why a compact upstream run of 5 D is sufficient instead of the 10–20 D demanded by insertion probes.
- Reverse flow is measured, not ignored. Both directions are counted with sign, so a circulating loop that reverses during valve changeover does not lose volume or corrupt the total.
Inside the spool the acoustic path sits in a machined seat with a defined path length and angle, and that is the decisive difference from clamp-on hardware: the geometry is fixed at the factory rather than established by a field installer with a tape measure. Consequently the stated 0.5 % of reading applies to the meter as it leaves the workshop, with no site-dependent derating.
Buyers who compare a spool body with a clamp-on set are usually weighing install effort against purchase price. The honest engineering answer is that the spool pays back in the first commissioning window, because it removes the widest source of error in ultrasonic flow measurement: variable transducer geometry.
Typical duty covers chilled and hot water in commercial buildings, district heating substations, boiler feed and make-up lines, process cooling water and CIP circuits. The sizing rule that keeps accuracy predictable is to land the design flow between 1.0 and 3.0 m/s so the night-time turn-down still sits above 0.1 m/s, and to step down one line size rather than accept a meter running permanently in the bottom fifth of its range.

It needs far less than most engineers expect. The SP2000 uses a reflected double-path acoustic arrangement that averages the velocity profile across the diameter, so 5 D upstream and 3 D downstream are sufficient for the published accuracy. That matters in plant rooms and substations where a clamp-on station would need 10–20 D and simply has no wall length to offer. Where an elbow sits immediately upstream, a flow conditioner or one additional pipe diameter restores confidence. If your layout is tighter than 5 D, send the isometric drawing with the enquiry and we will confirm whether a dual-plane configuration or a different line size is the better answer.
Glycol changes the speed of sound in the water, and the converter corrects for it once the concentration is entered, so volumetric accuracy holds across the season. Wall roughness from magnetite or biofilm is handled through the documented roughness setting rather than by assumption, which keeps a fouled DN200 line inside roughly 1 % of reading instead of drifting two or three times that. Because the bore is unobstructed, debris passes through and the transducer faces are flush with the pipe wall, so there is nothing to catch solids. For heavily fouled loops we recommend a periodic ultrasonic wall-thickness check and a recalibration interval of two years instead of the usual three.
Yes, provided matched temperature sensors are ordered with it. The converter accepts two PT100 inputs, one on the supply and one on the return, and computes thermal energy in kWh by integrating flow against the temperature difference. Accuracy of the energy figure then depends mainly on the sensor matching rather than on the flow element, which is why we supply paired sensors calibrated as a set. This removes a separate heat meter from the substation bill of materials and, more importantly, removes the reconciliation mismatch that appears when flow and temperature come from two different devices with two different clocks and two different accuracy statements.
Standard flanged sizes in PN16 with an integral converter ship from stock in five to eight working days; PN25 and above, stainless bodies and the ±0.3 % calibration option add two to three weeks. Commissioning is a single shutdown: isolate the section, drop the spool between the flanges, torque to the drawing values, power up and confirm zero flow with the section filled and pumps stopped. Menu setup takes about twenty minutes for line size, units and output scaling. We supply a commissioning sheet with the meter so the zero check and the first flow verification are recorded in a form your QA file can accept without a follow-up visit from a service engineer.

The measurement principle should be chosen from the fluid, not from the price list. Where the stream carries more than roughly 100 mg/l of suspended solids — slurry, sludge, tailings — the reflectors a clamp-on Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter for slurry depends on are present, and a clear acoustic path is not; that instrument also installs without cutting the pipe. In clean closed-loop water the logic reverses: the transit-time spool piece ultrasonic flowmeter described on this page holds 0.5 % of reading down to 0.05 m/s while the Doppler principle has no particles to reflect from.
- Clamp-on Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter for slurry, sludge and tailings
- Ultrasonic open channel flowmeter for weir and flume discharge
- Sectional ultrasonic flowmeter with wide range and fast response
- Ultrasonic heat meter with remote transmission for energy billing
- Portable handheld ultrasonic flowmeter for site verification
- Wall mounted clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter for retrofit
